The Great Drain Game

Today some people came to talk to us about drains and water. We split into groups and did activities. The first activity our group did was finding all the rainwater drains. We had a map of the school and marked each spot that had a rainwater drain. It was kind of confusing cause some drains were for other things like toilet water. There were 23 rainwater drains in total.

The second activity we did was outside the caravan. There was a scaled model of a town and on a table beside it was a drain, a toilet, a sink and a bin. A teacher gave each of us an object which we had to decide where this object should go. The teacher told us how only toilet paper, pee or poo should go in the toilet (Not even normal tissues), only rainwater should go in the drain, sinks should have the normal water, soap water or paint and other things should go in the bin. After we got it right or wrong the teacher would ask us if it would go to the waste water treatment plant (water from the sinks and toilets) or the ocean (Water from drains).  It was fun.

Our last activity was in the hall. First we learned about what the wetlands are. There lived a lot of native NZ birds, fish and insects. Also we learned about filtering water. Basically there was some soil in a cut bottle that was connected to some grass. The teacher pored some dirty water into the bottle and then when the water came to the grass the water became a little bit cleaner.
Hope you enjoy!
